A substantial proportion of the worlds oil reserves are held in massive sea going tankers that then offload into tank farms from which the oil is transported to refineries through steel pipelines. Steel pipelines carry it most of the way to the end user, either in the form of high pressure gas or petroleum products. If a high pressure pipeline fails it causes an explosion which can send debris many hundreds of meters and should the product ignite it can cause a disaster on a national scale. Minor errors in corrosion control technology have caused such incidents overseas in recent years as pipelines age. There are many thousands of miles of steel pipelines buried in every country in the world and the public are largely unaware of their presence except for the occasional marker post where the pipelines cross roads. In the early days of buried pipelines the steel corroded very quickly where it was in contact with aggressive soil causing leaks that cost money and pollution. Corrosion is an electrochemical reaction between metal and electrolyte that releases energy. It is possible to control corrosion by stopping the release of energy. It was found that an insulating coating improved the efficiency of the cathodic protection as it separated the electrolyte from the steel. Not only does this limit the chemical contact but it concentrates the cathodic protection current on the small areas where the coating is not perfect. The first attempt at cathodic protection resulted in a staggering improvement in the useful life of the pipeline to which it was applied, and it rapidly became a standard requirement in pipeline specification. Dry cell batteries are corrosion cells and the science behind these is improving daily in the drive to achieve more efficient energy storage and use in electric vehicles and smoothing out the power grids that make modern living possible. The basic concept fo cathodic protection has been defined by many scientists but such a system is not composed of simple elements in the way that batteries are, because the electrolyte is the ground itself. This electrolyte is uncontrollable and has an almost infinite variety of qualities. The chemical composition and electrical conductivity can span a vast range, as can the temperatures and pressures to which the reaction is subjected. However, cathodic protection is so effective that it seems to have been acceptable to over-design systems and invent monitoring systems without paying too much attention to basic details. This worked for many years but then pipelines started to fail even when regarded as 'protected'. Investigation and research revealed that there is a basic error in the measuring technique which was recommended to establish a criterion for the successful application of cathodic protection. Many scientific papers have been published and there is now no internationally accepted criteria, leaving pipeline operators to rely on an assortment of recommendations and codes of practice which have all failed at one time or other. Detailed studies have been carried out but much technology is not put into practice at present, with the result that there is a high risk of pipeline failure which could be identified and remedied for a fraction of the cost of repair. Neglecting this issue has led to loss of life, damage to property, massive pollution and interruption of the energy supply which feeds today's society. Cathodic Protection is the application of the laws of electricity and electrochemistry. In nature these laws demand that electrical equilibrium is reached as described by the laws of thermodynamics. These natural laws are universal and must be obeyed no matter which country or ethnic beliefs prevail. A physical Cathodic Protection Network exists and consists of all of the conductive paths in the world and all of the sources of electrical energy because the science of cathodic protection is the application of the laws of electricity superimposed over the laws of electrochemistry. Cathodic Protection Network is a global electronic circuit that is altered by the installation of electrical devices that effect the equilibrium between the ground (electrolyte) and each metallic interface with the ground. Cathodic Protection Network is also a foundation that I initated over a decade ago to provide an internet facility and point of scientifically based, technical excellence for professionals who specialise in the application of corrosion control using electricity in a process that has been named 'cathodic protection'. If a pipeline leaks it affects everybody in the world because the whole supply network is is balance between supply and demand. If a pipeline leaks the lights go out somewhere. Steel corrodes if buried in ground because all ground contains chemicals so we coat pipelines with material that resists chemicals and electrical energy. However, coatings can never be perfect because of the way pipelines are constructed so we have to stop the energy that is discharged due to the reaction at coating faults. We can do this in the same that a battery charger manages to charge many batteries at the same time. We can use two main techniques called 'sacrificial anodes' and 'impressed current' and it is not necessary to explain these here. We first have to identify the exact location of each coating fault at which corrosion can occur and then measure the corrosion current in that corrosion cell. We then have to apportion enough energy into each coating fault to stop the energy getting out. The normal way to do this is to employ a company of auditors but we have no money to do this and have no need to do it either. Each member of CPN is required to produce a personal budget for a year’s work for which you will ask for a reward and expenses. The budget will describe the work that you will do and what it will produce of value to the whole of CPN. (For example, use my computer valued at £300 for 4 hours each day @ £20 per hour to contact 200 people and tell them gossip and give them links. Use my car valued at £40 per day (or whatever to hire a fully serviced car and fuel) to travel to the training centre or to pipeline sites, workshops etc. Or to hire a taxi or other vehicle.
